Clyde,
I'm glad you are not experiencing an extended drought. Claire has my total
sympathy. We have not had any rain for almost 2 months. It has rained within
20 miles on either side a couple of times, but not here. My three rain
barrels have been totally dry for 6 weeks. Temps are way above normal. The
water table is dropping. I tried saving "grey water" from the kitchen to
water my new rhodos and my containers of annuals, but there must have been
too much soap or something. It seemed to do more harm than good. Although we
have a shallow well, I have been very carefully watering some things by
pulling back multch and pouring water directly around the plants. Very time
consuming as the initial applications just bead up and roll away on the
surface of the earth. By applying very little at first and poking holes in
the soil, it will eventually start soaking in.
I'm glad I didn't buy the pulmonarias I was looking at this spring. They
would be toast by now. Some of my water loving purchases this spring haven't
been planted yet. This is good because it takes less water to soak them in a
bucket than to try to water them in the ground.
The storms that Claire had have gone too far out to sea and bypassed us here
in eastern Canada. Everyday, we eagerly look at the new long range forecast
only to be disappointed that there is still no rain in sight.
