Re: Hakonechloa was: Plant search

Karen,

The amount of shade that Hakonechloa will tolerate sorta depends on
where you are. In my garden, it gets light to medium shade, not deep
shade but not a lot of sun, either....gets a few odd rays around noon
when the sun is right overhead, but is otherwise mostly shaded by a
dogwood (C. florida) on the west with a large black locust behind
that and lives peeping out from under the skirts of my cherished, but
not totally identified, Cimicifuga on the east and on the north side
of a rather tall clump of geraniums. There is a tiny bit of open sky
above the Cimicifuga, but not much, as the roof of our covered walk
is on the east of that. It seems to want to face the south so it can
find a few rays of sun, but seems pretty happy - has been in the same
place for around 10 years...*very* slowly increasing in size of
clump. It's at the edge of the path, so sort of flows over it.

A couple of years ago, I did an article on this grass with a link to
a list of online nurseries who carried it. Have no doubt that many
of those links don't work anymore, but would guess that most of the
nurseries are still alive and likely still list Hakonechloa. You can
see a photo of my clump in the article. URL to that article is:

This is truly a lovely plant and well worth getting....used to be
very expensive, but I have noted that the price is a lot more
reasonable in most nurseries these days. I don't find it fast
growing. Have heard tell of others for whom it clumps up at a
greater rate. One of these days, I'm going to get the species, which
is a lovely solid green. Saw a photo of it used in a waterfall
effect coming down a hill of large boulders that really intrigued me.
Of course, I don't have a hill of grand boulders, but the idea could
be adapted.

I only wish I had about 10 times more Hakonechloa than I actually do.
 Try it, you'll like it:-)
