Re: Where to start

In the current issue of Gardens Illustrated, a British magazine, there is an
article that describes how the famous gardener Beth Chatto turned her woods
into a woodland garden. The first step seems to be deciding on a path
through the vegetation.

My sense, from reading various articles, is that you will have to cut down a
few trees, or at the very least limb up several, in order to increase your
light. When you plant, you will have to take into consideration root
competition, which will be substantial. (This I can speak about from
experience.) My dim memory is that Marge's early shade gardening postings
deal very well with this issue.
