On a less refined level, I have grown H. lancifolia for years in two
matching concrete planters on my front porch in FULL shade. They are big
enough to make a show, do very well there and are no trouble at all, and
are quite charming in Sept when they bloom. In late fall when they go
dormant I stick yew cuttings in with them to fill the void. In spring when
the hostas start to come up I pitch the yew. Something there all the time.
Lancifolia get no respect, but for a use like this they have a certain
grace that more expensive hostas lack.
