If its the top of the plant it might be a fungal disease, these tend to
strike when the weather is hot and humid in mid summer.

You might want to treat them with a fungicide with a sticker in it in early
July or late June.
I do not have access to more specific information right now, but hopefully
this will help.

If the problem begins at the soil surface again it probably is a fungus.
This type of problem is exasperated if the rootstock in planted to deep the
first year or two.

A location with good air movement might help too and avoid getting the top of
the plant wet during watering when the temps are high.

Generally these plants are not hard to grow if in the right location.  Most
times that they fail , it is because people give them to much shade.  But hot
humid nights do promote fungal problems
