I've never had enough slug damage on my hostas to notice, as the
gastropods much prefer eating lettuce. It's the deer that eat the
hostas, but only after they've eaten all the cabbages. So I think
the thing to do is grow trap crops - a frilly border of lettuce all
around the hosta area.
