Hi Diann,
Norway maples seed themselves all over the waste places and unattended back
gardens of cities. They are in company with ailanthus, mulberry, and certain
cottonwoods. The Norways make a shade canopy that eventually kills
everything underneath it's canopy. I am speaking from upstate New York where
the growing season is shorter than many of you enjoy and still this tree is
major nuisance tree in small gardens.
I would guess that it's fast growth was the original reason for planting.
Also some cultivars of the Norways are in commerce, a red leaf form I think.
From my point of view working many years in inner city rehab, this tree is an
expensive choice. One of the houses that I recall had roots of a Norway
maple enter the cellar windows, crawl along the inner foundations and come to
rest in the cellar laundry sinks. It was like some evil alien residing in
the cellar. I hate this tree.
