Re: Epimedium

Well, Anelle, I have a very hard time considering Epimedium invasive!
Some forms will spread and make a nice ground cover after some
years; others are more clump formers. These are marvelous plants for
shade or part shade. Some are drought tolerant, once established,
and some are not. They are worth growing for their foliage alone.
Easy care plants.

I suggest you go to the Epimedium authority in this country, Darrell
Probst, who has and is introducing many new forms to horticulture
these days. He has a web site, The Epimedium Page, that's basically
photos, but you can email Karen (his wife, who does the email)
darrellpro@earthlink.net for their Garden Visions Nursery catalog,
which has descriptions and a photo section. I don't think they have
yet gotten out a 2003 catalog, but you can get the 2002 one and order
from that. I ordered from a 2001 version:-)

He pretty much tells you which ones will spread and which will be
clump formers, but if you have any questions, email Karen - she can
probably also recommend some for you if you can't make up your mind.
I had a heck of a time with that catalog because I wanted one of ALL
of them...not too realistic. Finally got an order together this
spring, but, oh! did it hurt to have to cross off plants I really,
really want to get it to come into reality; about wore out the
catalog turning pages back and forth, dithering and dithering. Had
to convince self there is always next year to get more:-)

After I met Darrell last year at NARGS winter study weekend, I wrote
about his nursery - two parts - the article has bunches of pix (which
may make it slow loading if you're on dial-up) and descriptions of
various species - you might be interested. He's a very nice person,
BTW, and an excellent speaker (if anybody is looking for speakers for
groups).
