Hi, Ran. I agree; the only areas I clean down to the ground in fall are
those inhabited by plants that attract powdery mildew, the incidence of
which is significantly reduced by year-round 'clean culture.' I have also
wondered about the mid-day watering taboo. I HAVE to water certain of my
hostas during the heat of day, or they will wilt (my soil doesn't retain
water well enough in all areas to rely on an early morning watering when
temps. are over 90F). I have tried various watering schedules on roses and
lawn, and have found only the late afternoon and evening hours to be poor
choices, as some lawn diseases and mildews proliferate in cool, moist
conditions, and the moisture provides direction to slugs otherwise
aimlessly emerging from their hiding places during the night.
