I happen to agree with what you are saying in this note. But I
am more than baffled about how learning to love slugs

Sorry I took part of your post out of context. But I have a question, and I am
not being facetious: What is the context? Are you against killing slugs? Or,
are you saying that deer have a place in the eco-system as slugs do also?
I think slugs are like mosquitoes. Deer are intelligent animals. I abhor the
killing of deer, but I really think slugs are nasty little creatures that
carry a plethora of diseases and should be eliminated from the Earth. Don't
you agree?
