Hi, I have planted tulips as shallow as 1" and as deep as 7" with no
difference in longevity or health (the measurement is the amount of soil
atop the bulb, not the depth of the hole). Daisies and hostas seem to
attract critters away from everything else, including tulips.
When I lived in Texas, I dug my tulips up in July and refrigerated them
until January, then planted them close to a fence, protected from
prevailing winds. They were not as vigorous as they are here in Michigan,
but they did grow and bloom for a few seasons.
