Re: [SHADEGARDENS] Tulips
Tulips, Crocuses and ther animals that eat them.
While these bulbs are all tasty morsels for the animals that wait till spring
for their delicacy, when these bulbs are properly seasoned, with what we might
find a culinary delight and excitement to our pallettes, a little seasoning
goes a long way in changing the tastebuds of the nasty rodents, and cute furry
creatures.
On a non-freezing day, and for at least 8 hours of non-freezing temps
following...try this:
Mix Horticultural Oil and Soap to directions on bottle - then, season well with
more than a dash of Tabasco Sauce, or another HOT PEPPER sauce, or try HOT WAX,
found in most retail garden stores. Spray liberally on all emerging bulbs and
their blossoms --Immediate turn off to the furry guys.
If you don't have the time to mis the stuff, just go into your spice cabinet --
ANY aromatic spice sprinkled liberally around the foliage will have the same
results -- I've used ginger, allspice, garlic, cinnamon, cardamon, etc. in a
pinch.
Believe me, it works. In my landscape business, we plant somewhere around
20,000 bulbs in total, and have never had a complaint.
By the way, when we first plant the bulbs in the fall, we dust them with
medicated foot powder for two reasons. 1) It stops mold and fungus on the
bulbs., and 2), more importantly, throws the squirrels off the scent. WE also
make sure to remove (blow off) any stray bulb "wrappers" that might leave a
clue to what we've just left in the ground.
Happy cooking!~!!
