I took my cup of hot tea with me for a walk in the garden early this
morning. Chilly, but not as cold as they had forecast.
The first plants to catch my eye as I walk the driveway were the daffodils
around the house and up in the field. Some are in full bloom in spite of
the 8 degrees low temps we had a week or so ago. Most are not fully up or
are in bud now. The Siberian squill with its bright blues make a nice
accent to the yellow of the daffodils.
The heather next to the gold oriental spruce looks the best since I
have had it in the garden. The black-green needles of the foliage is
overlaid with masses of lavender-rose.
The first trillium of the year, T. nivale, the Dwarf Snow Trillium has
been in bloom for over two weeks now. Still going in a small colony up on
the hillside and in the pots in the coldframe.
The helleborus are going great and some have been since the beginning
of January. H. foetidus is in it's best year to date with masses of green
blooms over black-olive foliage reaching over two feet in height. H.
odorus, in several locations, with its golden-green scented blossoms has
lungwort nearby with blue blooms and felted green tiny foliage. (Johnson's
Blue) H. Torquatus, H. prupurea and multifidius give good reasons to walk
the hill side path.
Primula veris got bit a couple of weeks ago but is coming out just in
time to be in bloom along with the p. vulgaris. Mertensia, the Virginia
Bluebells, have their felted purple-black and green foliage emerging with
buds down in the nest of leaves. Lots of little green noses peeking through
the leaf litter, but that is a story for another day and another cup of tea
