[SHADEGARDENS] Railroad gardens

Hello fellow robin members,

Yesterday Cindy Johnson asked about railroad gardens:

A railroad garden is a model train layout in a landscape setting. There
are electrically-powered model trains available that are designed
specifically for outdoor use. Planting materials selected are usually
determined by the gauge(size) of the train. The key is to select small
plants that suggest a natural full-sized landscape. Alpines, small rock
garden plants, and miniature trees and shrubs are generally used. The
closest analogy I can come up with is if one were selecting plants for a
trough garden.

The hobby originated in Great Britain in the late nineteenth century.
There are international and national societies, local clubs, and a magazine
devoted to the subject.

Our first layout will be very small and simple compared to others. We've
seen layouts and pictures that include several trestles, tunnels, sidings,
water features, miniature towns, miniature people, and even miniature cows!
