On the bagged hostas, I would recommend that you buy the same plants at a
nursery, either in a pot or dug for you at the site. I bought some hostas in
England in 1995 and sent them airmail to my home in Indiana. When they arrived
the contents looked like celery. Several of these plants died.
Your question is not silly at all. The genus is named after an Austrian by the
name of Host. So, the pronunciation of the word "hostas" should probably be
somewhere between the two examples you have given us;however, both here and in
England the word is pronounced Hah(to rhyme with the Spanish "la")--stuz;the
singular "hosta"=as you indicate: Hah-stah
