[SG] Hydroponic Hostas

Voles automatically know which are your favorite hostas..... right! They
also obviously taste better if you paid more for them.... right! Going out
into the garden and finding my newest and dearest hosta flat on the ground,
with absolutely no roots on it, but a bit of what would have to be called a
stalk.... I put it in a glass of water to enjoy it as long as I could. Much
to my surprise it grew roots. The rest of you undoubtedly know all about
this, but it was news to me. This is now my first treatment for any who
have had their roots eaten by voles. Surprising how many I have managed to
save. If the rootless can grow roots, see no reason why they can't be grown
in water, &/or hydroponically. Learn something new every day, then die &
forget it all...... Nancy

>I have some remaining questions. 1. I am interested

>Aden's book)--hosta with roots exposed sitting in flat
>tray of water. Does anyone on this list grow these
>this way. If so, how well do they do? Also, has
>anyone grown hostas hydroponically in either water with
>the expanded clay pellets or in rockwool? <By the way,

>anyone from their native lands? It would be
>interesting to find some that speak English to join the
>discussions--any ideas on how to contact some Japanese
>growers?>

>2. I want to convert most of my indoor garden to
>hydroponic growing due to my allergies to the peat
>dust, perlite dust, etc. Have any of you grown
>shade-tolerant plants as indoor houseplants? What
>would be the pros and cons? It seems that shade
>tolerant plants outside would be perfect as houseplants
