Susan,
I have been growing kalmia for about 8 years in zone 5. Give it a try. I put
a burlap tent around them each winter. I only have two and have killed about
5, but I don't think it was the cold, I think it was my soil. I think they
got too dry. The ones that have survived get morning light, soil that drains
well, but get water often.
Give them a try. You might want to buy some from Forest Farm, for a smaller
price just to grow a bunch and see what lives. Good luck.
