There are good instructions at http://www.roundup.com which need to be
followed precisely for good results on poison ivy. Pay particular
attention to the concentration used, time of application, and don't
let it drip off the leaves (it reduces the dose to be absorbed by the
plant). Likewise, don't mix it stronger than specified... the herbicide
does not properly translocate if you use too strong a mixture.
Finale, a newer herbicide of the same class, is supposed to control
PI also, though I've never worked with it on PI (it's a much quicker
time to visual damage and it's rainfast sooner than most glyphosate
(Roundup, Rodeo, etc.) formulations. I did help test the early
formulations of Roundup on PI in the field (well, actually, in a
campground), and you can get excellent results if you pay attention
to growth stage and concentration of the glyphosate.
Poison ivy germinates readily in disturbed soils.
