Re: [SG] kalmia

Sorry for the second posting...good morning again:

Hi Bobbi:

To acidify around plants, one can use aluminum sulfate or a good acid
fertilizer like Holly-Tone.

As far as soil testing goes, I decided to have several areas checked: front
lawn, hosta and daylily seedling beds, and the back lawn. Here in New
England, soils are generally acid. My front lawn has a pH about 4.5-5.0. It
needs a lot of lime to bring it up to 5.5-6.5. The seedling beds are about
5.5-6.0. So I'll add just a bit of lime to sweeten the soil and also add
compost and manure to add to the organic composition. The back lawn is about
6.0. So I'll add abit of lime. I'm removing large patches of moss to add to
stone and othe areas within my garden.

Hope this assists in making your soil testing decision easier. The most
important issue is cost for testing. I went through U Mass, and the cost for
pH and amts of N-K-P was $8 per site.
