 Since you're in zone 8, you might want to consider leyland cypress for a
large hedge.
 Yes, I know, one of the most overused plants in our area. Like looking at
another yellow daylily or another medium green hosta.
 But they do well, look nice and grow almost as fast as kudzu.
 The few downsides are that they prefer sun to deep shade, are deer
magnets, and like most evergreens, they are prone to bagworms.

 Hey, at least its better than photinia. ;-)

 You might need to be a much milder zone 8 than we are in the winter for
neriums. Here they are strictly a specialty plant, too much windburn in
winter, when they don't freeze back to the roots. They are also a bit
leggy, definately full sun plants for a south facing wall with good winter
wind protection, and tall perennials in front to hide their 'legs'.

 What height range does your hedge need to be? Will it be sheared on a
regular basis, or allowed to grow out to maturity with only minor necessary
shaping?
