Hello Rosemary,
Some of the most overlooked resources for Rhodies and Azaleas are the
local discount stores. If you are not a collector and already knowledgeable
seeking only the elite of the hybrids..... Wal-Marts, K-Marts, Hope Depot,
etc are great. They, for the most part, sell the old ironclads that have
been around forever perking right along. That is one of the reasons they
are cheap in price. Shop at the right time and you can even see them in
bloom when purchasing. Also try to get there before they kill or stress
them through ignorance or negligence in proper care.
Many of the old varieties will handle our clay soils much better than many
of the newer hybrids. I have ordered and collected quite a few Rhodies over
the years and the ones still in the garden blooming each year are the old
cheapies.
