Great information on this genus, Wayne...only a couple of notes to add.
Yew may grow in deep shade, but I find that they thin out badly and look
really ratty after a while....best in sun to light or dappled shade IMO.
They are poisonous, but that does not deter my local deer herd from
considering them a gastronomical treat. If I don't fence mine, the deer
completely denude the branches of needles - not a pretty sight. So, for
anyone with a local deer problem, think again before you select Taxus as
your evergreen backbone plant. I love them; just wish bambi didn't.
