Hello, my name is Chuck Evans.
I live in Phoenix, AZ (Zone 10) where it is difficult to find much shade. The
shade we do have gets over 110 degrees in the summer here, so it is difficult
to maintain a shade garden that most of you would recognize. I do have a very
shady spot on the north side of my house where I experiment with various
plants. I collect different plants whenever I travel around the country, and
try growing them there. I currently have a wild rose from near Telluride
Colorado, violets from my Grandmas house in Glendale, a bleeding heart that I
bought in Missouri, a few different primrose varieties, mountain laurel from
northern AZ, numerous Bearded Irises that I have acquired from friends in
different states, wild strawberries from Minnesota, aloe vera, and a shrub
that they call buckbrush in Missouri. I also own land in SW Missouri (Zone
6).
I joined this list because I wanted to learn more about gardening in the
shade, not only in Phoenix, but on my 10 acres in Missouri most of which is
wooded with very old (and large) oak and hickory trees. I spend about 5-6
weeks a year there, most of it working on the landscape. I have a travel
trailer set up there to stay in, and intend on building my retirement home
there in the future. I would like to have a lot of the landscape established
already at retirement time.
Well, that is why I am here. I will probably ask more questions, than I can
answer. I am sure I will enjoy this list.
THANKS for listening,,,
