Hi
I just did a program for my garden subject on plants for fairly dense shade
and the companion plants I recommended for Hostas were Astilbe, Hellebores,
Rhododendrons ( Larger leafed = more shade tolerant), Pulmonarias & Tiarellas.
Also select species and varieties of Hardy Geraniums. These are the plants I
put in my shadiest areas. I am not sure what USDA zone Illinois is in so you
will have to check on hardiness requirements of these plants. I think most are
hardy to zone 3 or 4 except the Hellebores. On the Rhododendrons, you should
check on what their hardiness is. Some of the ones I grow are hardy to -25.
