Hi Clyde
I was referring more particularly to the companion plants where I have the
most experience, however, this is a forest community and since we are in a low
latitude (So. Calif) and a high elevation, yes we do grow Hostas, Tiarellas,
Pulmonarias, Astilbes as well as some of the more shade tolerant Hardy
Geraniums in the fairly dense shade of conifers where they seldom receive any
direct sun. I am not an expert on Hostas and due to the fact that they are
the favorite of my most prevalent pests (Slugs and squirrels) I only have one
left right now, although I have been looking into some of the slug tolerant
varieties. I am not sure if the one I still had last fall is still with me as
it looks like a squirrel has dug a huge hole where it was planted. The others
I gave to my friend who doesn't have slugs.

In more northerly latitudes many of these plants may prefer less shade.
Lillian
