Hi; I don't know why vinegar and soap would be used as herbicides, though
both have value as insecticides/molluscicides. I am sure salt would kill
any plant; is it not what the Romans used to render farmer's fields barren,
an effect that lasted for many, many years? I wouldn't salt any area where
I wanted plants to grow, becausethe salt isn't selective about victims.

Perhaps there is an amount of salt you can use safely, which will kill off
emerging weeds and leave the larger, established perennials unharmed. Does
anyone know if that is true? How long does it take for the salt to leach
out of the soil, so 'build-up' effects from subsequent applications don't
occur? I once was told that salt mixed into the soil promotes fruit
production in avocado trees, but never personally saw the results of such a
treatment, nor have I read or heard about it from any authoritative source.
