I've heard of standing cypress used for some species of Ipomopsis, a pretty
wildflower of western US. The foliage matches your description, but the
flowers don't -- they have five petals and long tubes. I can't think of
any plants with threadlike foliage and dark red flowers. Sorry not to be
more help.
