Karen,
Arisaema rust is BAD NEWS. You must IMMEDIATELY remove all affected
parts and trash them, even if this means cutting off every bit of
growth. The tubers will often recover and return next year. If you
don't, they will die. This is a very, very contagious disease for
this genus and the only known way (according to the gurus on
Arisaema-L) to combat it is to remove the affected growth.
I've found it on one of my clumps this year - and am keeping a sharp
eye out for any other cases of it. Hope I got that before it had a
chance to move on.
I have had it show up randomly over the years and have removed
affected parts and had the plants return, albeit a tad smaller, but
with no disease.
But, whip out there tomorrow and grit your teeth and cut off every
bit of affected growth (showing any rust at all)...EVERY bit. Take a
plastic trash bag with you and stuff it in as soon as you cut it off
- don't leave it laying about for a while. If only one set of leaves
or a spath show it, remove those and leave the rest and monitor them.
If you see any more, keep cutting it off. If part of a stem isn't
affected, leave it - just take the affected bits, but watch any
remainders carefully to make sure it doesn't show up on them. If you
are able to leave any growth, it helps the tuber..but if you can't,
removal is the only chance the plant has for survival.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but this is one disease that
needs quick action.
