Clyde, you might want to try Polygonatum odoratum 'Variegatum with the
Euphobia dulcis 'Chameleon' - the "black" of the stems exactly echoes
the "black" of the foliage, and the contrast of leaf size and texture is
wonderful. For Those in Zones 7b and further south, Geranium
sessiliflorum nigrescens is great as a tiny rock garden
plant.Cryptotaneia is also inthe black family, as is Lysimachia ciliata
purpurea. While not "black", The common edible sage, Salvia
officaianlais "purpurea" is a pretty great all around plant. Then
there's always the dark form of Cimicifuga ramosa atropurpurea. I have
a fabulous Aquilegia that qualifies as black, that I call A. 'Almost
Black', the flowers of Dianthus Barbatus nigrescens and D. barbatus
"Sooty' are trulyh black. There are very dark markings in Salvia
lyrata, a wonderful groundcover. And of sourse, there are the very
darrk Sedums. As a Shrub, you might want to try Calycantus, or Weigela
'Java Red', Sambucus 'Guincho Purple', Prunus cistena, really dark
Cotinus, Hypericum 'Albury Purple' or Rosa rubrifoila glauca. As a Vine
(doesn't really climb, but fantastic anyway is Clematis recta purpurea.
The blackest plant around, as far as I know is Ophiopogon planiscapus
niger.
