Re: [SG] 'Maraschino Cherry'

Hi Beth & All:

I have four of these growing in my garden and they came from the Q &
Z Nursery in Rochelle, IL. I know very little about this plant
(officially) except that I was told that it is the green form of
Cherry Berry. Both have the narrow leaves that curl slightly (mine
are young so I'm going by what I see here) and they have red scapes.
Side by side the two plants look the same in size and leaf shape and
both have the nice red scapes. It is not hard to believe that
Maraschino Cherry is the green form of Cherry Berry.

Now, after writing all of the above, I got smart and opened up my Q &
Z 1998 Wholesale Catalog and on page 35 it reads - 'Maraschino
Cherry' (2 1/4" pots) $3.00, plant size 16" high by 36" wide. Leaves
7" long by 3" wide; shiny, dark green color. Flowering; lavender
flowers open from mid to late July on 36" scapes that are purplish
red. Growing; fast growth rate; transplant 2 1/4" pots into 1-gallon
containers. General comments; fast-growing sport of 'Cherry Berry'
(for once I was right) introduced by our nursery; colorful scapes;
excellent ground cover.

I hope this information, taken right out of the originator's catalog,
helps you. I now know more about this plant that is growing in my
garden. I had no ide it would get so big. Thought it was a smallish
one! I will also watch this one to see how different it is from
Cherry Berry, since it is listed as a sport. Perhaps "green form"
will hold true.
