Barbara--and Everyone--please do not confuse Lysimachia with Lythrum.
Lythrum salicaria is the purple loosestrife that is illegal in many
states. Lysimachia is a very robust genus of plants (to put it mildly),
but it is neither illegal nor harmful to native wildlife. I don't believe
there is any such thing as Lysimachia purpurea. I know the common name is
loosestrife in both cases, but Lythrum (BAD!) is not synonymous with
Lysimachia (GOOD--well, not too bad).
