I need a plant. I'm very pleased with a shade garden I just
designed & installed for a client. With one huge exception:
this plant I need.
Conditions: Bright shade from mid-day to late afternoon,
moderately dark shade in the morning and dappled/filtered
sunlight from late afternoon 'til dark. Fundamentally, I need a
plant that will be happy with little sun.
Let me say from the outset, it cannot be a hosta. I already ran
through that. The deer around my client's house take them right
to the ground within the first week of planting. Nuts. Of
course, that would have been too easy. I likely would have
selected Gold Standard and been real happy.
I would love it to be evergreen (Zone 6) but that isn't
essential. I guess. I do need it to have uncut, glossy,
preferably dark green leaves - or at least bold ones. It is
surrounded by Aruncus, Cimcifuga, various ferns, variegated
Polygonum and other stuff. That's important. I need that
gloss and broader, less delicate leaf for contrast. Something
like an Asarum. Whatever it is should be between around 18-24"
in height (spread is negotiable); this condition is a bit more
flexible. Actually, depending on the plant's density, could go
to 3'.
Barring anything glossy & dark green, something bold &
evergreen with a cream or gold variegation. If there is
something along these lines, it needn't be broad-leaved
necessarily. (I briefly considered some of the chamaecyparus
but as far as I know they all need lots more sun.)
I've exhausted my mental and other searchable lists. If
anything should jump into mind, I'd sure like to hear
suggestions. Fun for those that enjoy a challenge
Jaime, who is extremely sore and thinks every gardener over 40
should have a hot tub.
