Re: [SG] Rabbit Problem (was Tall Autumn Joy)

I used to have a lot of groundhogs and the only way I found that actually
worked to keep them from munching my plants was to fence the garden with
wire fencing (doesn't have to be too tall - 3' or so) buried about a foot
deep in the soil and angled outward - they start to dig under and hit the
wire and are not smart enough to realize it has an end (these are not
rocket scientist types). Used the cheap old kind with the relatively
large holes and realized I should have used the kind with the smaller holes
at the bottom known as "rabbit" fencing because the baby groundhogs can
slip right through the regular holes.

Had one baby get in once, pig out on a clump of Queen Anne's Lace (they are
fond of this) and become too rotund to get back out. Chased that cute
little brainless wonder around the garden for some time trying to get
him/her to go out one of the gates....no way... insisted on trying to get
out the same bit of fence it came in and kept getting stuck. Finally had
to cut the wire to let it out......eventually they get too big to fit
through the fence, but they can munch quite a bit before then.

Deer are a whole 'nother story....I've had good luck flinging Milorganite
around and recently received from a net buddy a bottle of This 1
Works.....we will see. Only sure way is to fence them out and there are
several options for this. Different herds of deer will eat different
plants and be repulsed by different brands of deterrent for different
amounts of time....what works one year is not guaranteed to work another.
Hinder works, but must be reapplied after *every* rain.

Good luck!
