 Hi Gene,

I have a Kirengoshoma palmata growing in my shade garden ( gets 4 hours of direct
sun). The plant is about 5 years old. It's only May 19th, and the plant is already
4' across and 40" high. Everyone who comes to the garden asks what the plant is. It
forms a perfect mound, the foliage is beautiful - maple shaped leaves in a soft
green.

From the time I first planted it, It took until the third year until the plant was
remakable. It is one of my favorite plants, and when I design a shade garden for
clients, I'ts very often one of the first plants that I think of including. I do
have automatic irrigation in the bed, although there have been times when the
irrigation didn't reach this part of the garden.-- However, I have a "secret
weapon"-- behind my shade garden, there's a wooded area where the leaves (Oak and
Maple) have been collecting for years, as well as any weeds and garden refuse that I
throw over and through the shrubs that back the garden. Whenever I plant anything
new in this garden, I scrape away the leaves, gather up the worm castings and use
them as orgainc soil amendments. I've never fed this garden with any fertilizer --
the growth is amazing!!!!.
