Hello David,
        And welcome to the Shade lovers list.
        Do you use native plants in your designs? I am sure you are aware as a
landscape architect that some Federal projects will require you to use
natives in your designs. If a plant is native to the area you are working
in it would certainly clear up a lot of requirements up front. Is it hardy,
will it perform in this environment, etc. Also a good way to get off the
'same old stuff' that is churned out each year by the mass marketers in the
perennial plant industry.  You tend to see the same plant in a nursery
whether you are shopping in your home town or three States over. Nothing
wrong with them, just there are other options.
        You mention some of your favorites as Columbine, Iris, Hosta and Day Lily.
Are excellent. Of course, Hosta and Day Lilies are not native, but there
are numerous species of Columbine and Iris that are native. There are about
40 species of Iris native to the U.S.
        Like you I find it hard to settle on any one genus of plant as a favorite.
I am a bit of a collector and each year my focus is different. For the past
5 years I have been collecting Polygonatums, Arisaema, Asarum among others.
Love to take a native I am familiar with and track it down around the world
to see how many will perform well in my garden.
