They sent me the wrong peony more than once! Before the first had
bloomed I sent for 2 more; they eventually bloomed pink too. None bloomed
for the first 3 or 4 years. Then, planted in locations miles apart, they
each produced many tiny buds that did not mature into blossoms. After that
they still had the many tiny buds of which a very few grew into bloom.
I had several other peonies that bloomed normally, so I don't think it was
the environment that caused that.
I now have a clear bright red called "Red Charm" from a peony farm in Mo.
It's a beautiful flower, but not as dark as the heirloom one. It's holding
its own here in the Atl area, where everything is shade.
The Grandmother's peonies were not fernleaf, but as I recall may have been
a slightly smaller plant than the pinks and whites. I'll have to look for
"Philippe" somewhere else, I don't want to try Henry Field's again. (It
takes too many years to find out what color they are!)
