Re: [SG] shadegardens Digest - 12 May 1999 (#1999-174)

I agree it's a matter of taste and while it's a good bit of work at the
start of the year I mulch all but the raised beds and therefore don't
weed. And yes, I have some carnations and other dianthus and a
few day lillies tucked in here and there. And lots of roses... mostly
English, Old Chap... :giggles:

The habit of long empty vistas of lawn comes from the French
(who's tastes we can argue at another time). They have those
vistas to immitate the nobility who had to keep a clear view on all
sides of the castle in order to repel attackers. I come from good
hardy peasant stock and find no need to immitate a bunch of
anemic, in bred, bluebloods.. <EG> nor am I likely to have to repel
the enemy.

Instead, I prefer to invite the wildlings into my life. Over thirty
varieties of birds, butterflies, moths, squirrels, chipmunks, racoons,
oppossum, skunk, frogs, toads and snakes... all are welcome
here. It's not completely filled in yet, no where near perfect.. I've
only been gardening for four years-- the wisteria hasn't even had a
chance to bloom.. :)

Now.. on a totally different subject, I recently acquired a japanese
hydrangae. Anyone have any experience with it?
