Don't know about Texas, but here they are indeed great shade plants. I
have several that have been blooming for months. I started with one plant
of Lenten Rose (supposed to be the easiest to grow) and have added two or
three since then. Tried H. foetidus last year and it died during the
late-summer drought. This year I have added a Christmas Rose and we'll see
how that does. My hunch is that the Christmas would do better for you down
there and might even bloom at Christmas time! Nothing bothers them. Maybe
someone to the south can advise you about which ones do best Down There.
