My nominations for Thug are Polygonum 'Painter's Palette' (AKA Tovara) -
although it is controllable if you reliably snip the flower stalk before it
seeds - and Equisetum. Don't let those catalogues fool you into believing
that the dwarf form is not invasive; in conditions that are the opposite of
what the plants thrive in, it will choke an average garden. And its shoots
camouflage themselves in a soil-colored indumentum, so you can't see them
to try to pull them until the root system is impossibly established.
