Marge, they have a deep tap root and need to be started as seedlings. I had
the opportunity to visit a large wooded garden several times this year and
the most impressive (to me anyway) thing was the abundant papaw trees.
I have also seen dogwood used as understory and they seem to do very well if
not in deep shade.
