Pawpaws do not sucker a lot unless they are cut down. Then you will get
a lot of new trees. I am slowly weeding them out and leaving just a few
big ones. I like the smell of the leaves and limbs and the zebra
butterfly loves to lay her eggs on the leaves. The fruit is not so
lovely though since it smells like over ripe bananas. My husband likes
to peel and eat them but I will pass on the custard idea. I have heard
that it takes a half bushel of fruits to get enough liquid to make a
custard or bread. I try to give all the seeds away so that I will not
have any more pawpaw trees. A whole forest is enough.
Oh yes, my theory on having fruit is having 2 plants from separate gene
pools. That is better that hanging up roadkill to get the flies to
pollinate the maroon blooms in the spring.
