Gene is right. Hamamelis mollis is the best witch hazel for fls and
fragrance. The cultivar 'Arnold Promise' is inferior, to my mind. As for
'Diana' and the other copper- and red-colored cvs, they don't make a show
in the garden. Think of the fls on maple trees--nice but not spectacular.
H. vernalis, the Ozark witch hazel, blooms a little later than mollis and
the fls are small and not showy, but it has beautiful fall color. I
believe H. virginiana is also supposed to have good color. Is that
correct, Clyde?
