When one of my Fothergillas showed these symptoms, I lifted it gently and
found that it had not a trace of root. In fact, even the base of the trunk had
been chewed. Obviously a rodent (or rodents) had attacked. Four other
Fothergillas very close had not been bothered. Hope this is not your problem!
