Plant Experiments

Hello; I have two reports and one question. First, I purchased a 'hardy'
banana tree (Japanese), and would just like to say it is doing very well,
though the temperatures have dipped below freezing twice. The top growth
was severely damaged, including the growing point (died), but it put out
strong side shoots. It is very doubtful that it will be hardy, though,
even in the Z7 conditions next to my foundation. Is anyone who has
nurtured this plant through the winter on this list?

I planted a Rumex sanguinaria in partial shade (supposed to have full sun),
and it looks great. It is apparently extremely cold-tolerant, as it has
not so far shown any damage from frost and low temperatures. Everything
else - native and non-native - looks like autumn except the lawn, the
Ophiopogon, and the Rumex.
This is a great little plant that I purchased from Plant Delights.

Harry Able wrote (as part of a discussion on this list) something about
bamboo plants dying if their culms were cut down while the plant was young,
if I understood him correctly. My plant just had a culm broken off in a
windstorm.
Is that going to kill the plant? It has several other culms, but only
three large ones. So far, the plant is healthy; even the broken culm -
still attached by a 1/4" thick piece - has green leaves of appropriate turgor.
