Cajun Joe:
I think my zone 9 is very similiar to yours...I have had much success with
the following ferns:
1) Lady Fern which can take a moderate amount of sunlight - nice light
fronds (feathery)
2) Wood Fern (of course) but will get yucky foliage at the first cold wind
but I just cut it back
3) Macho Fern - this one is very "cool".....nice large arching fronds that
seems to spread by runners....aggressive without being to much of a nuisance.
(**Favorite)
4) Shield Fern - looks very similiar to the Boston fern. Very aggressive
spreader...really too aggressive but some folks like like.
All four of these ferns have a very different appearance offering wonderful
contract....but they all seem to take our heat, drought and "weird" winters
perfectly.
Hope this helps. BTW - Most of these can be found at your local garden
centers throughout the year, even WalMarts and Home Depots.
Happy Gardening
