It takes some pleasure from the garden to be purist and limits your
experiences, I think.

A thought on rocks, which caused me a broken toe this summer, is that many
perennial plants can benefit by having a rock as a companion. The moisture
retained by a group of rocks is helpful in the summer droughts. There are
perennials that plain look better next to a rock, the smaller campanulas for
instance.

I live on a mountainside with rock both on top the soil and underlying all of
the garden area. At first I thought them a great burden but I have changed
my thinking in recent years. Anyone visiting my garden is welcome to take
home rocks (and ferns) which are in great abundance here. Most do.
