Re: shadegardens Digest - 7 Oct 2000 to 8 Oct 2000 - Special issue (#2000-333)

Connie, this reads like the kiss of death to all plant importation and for
that matter, all American Nurseries. Certainly, not all non-native plants
are invasive. As a matter of fact, some of our natives are invasive. I
certainly go along with the restrictions on invasive plants, barberry being
prohibited for example, purple loosestrife, english sparrows, etc, etc,
etc. Waterlilies frequently clog waterways, and I think all of us have seen
New York Fern and Hay Scented Fern crowding out other specimens. I am
gradually getting the oriental equivalents of our Appalachian Natives. No
one ever saw an invasive Shortia or Jeffersonia. I will go along with
eliminating the invasives, in fact, I have learned if it is growing out of
the bottom of the pot, I don't want it. Some of us have learned that
anything that grows robustly or enthusiatically is not for our gardens, not
if we want to grow anything else. That does not mean that I don't want to
try out new things from any country. I am really disturbed about this. It
is one thing to restrict known invasives, and quite another to restrict
propagation of all non-native plants. ..... Nancy

Introduction of non-native propagative plants or seeds for any purpose
(e.g., horticulture or botanical gardens) within the continental United
States (Department of Agriculture).
