The pods split when the seeds are ripe. They are generally (at least
on my plants) black papery items.
There are some real hostaphiles on this list who need to speak up
here about whether you can harvest the pods before they split and/or
whether frost damages them...come on guys - you know waaay more about
propagating hosta from seed than I do!
