Once it develops a patina, it's no longer effective for slugs as I

Joan -- Have you tried copper?  It does wonders -- they touch it and get a
shock.  :)  University of Minnesota Extension Service has a nice little page
about slugs at
http://www.extension.umn.edu/distribution/horticulture/DG7561.html that
makes for interesting ready.

You can pick up copper strips or tape, surround the base of your plants or
even a whole bed.  Done properly, this can add a sort of accent to your
garden -- copper weathers nicely and has a unique look.
