I live on the north coast of Washington State, a few miles from the
Olympic National Park and the rainforest. We are Zone 8 and very wet.
I took interest in the various primula when I went to a collectors'
nursery.
I now have my own nursery and I make an effort to grow plants that are
not found the regular nurseryies. We grow most everything from rooted
cuttings that I purchase, or from very small plants. I'm not a very
good seed grower.
We have the various candelabras, chionantha, 'Yvonne Gold Lace',
vialli, polyanthus, 'Mahogany Sunrise' (which has the deepest green
foliage!), denticulatas, auriculas, and I've now been collecting doubles
as they come available, often from tissue culture.....Ken Dearman, Roy
Cope, Granny Graham and 3 others that I am waiting to divide. The
quantities consume most of my shade area, and I'm sorry to say they
aren't better received by the public, but I don't think people can get
past the common primulas they see at the grocery store. Nevertheless,
it does not matter. It is the one plant that I will freely give up
commercial space for, as I so enjoy them myself. I'm even looking at
expanding the shade area to 40x100 so that things can be spaced better
(and I can grow even MORE!).
Last year I joined the Society and enjoy the publications very much.
I do have *one* cultural question....individual leaf tips on some of the
chandelabras, veris, and on the polyanthus are turning yellow. Are they
TRUELY gluttonous feeders? Could it be a nutrient deficiency? It
gradully turns the entire leaf yellow, so we remove the offender, but
I'd much rather do what needs to be done and forego the labor of
trimming.
